With Bergschaft over the Teufelsjoch | Ski tour - Gemsfairen & Teufelsjoch
An alpine ski tour that leaves its mark.
Field report by Sandra Gschnitzer
January 2025
Early in the morning at Urnerboden: The air was cool, the sky clear, the mood promising. Ten adventure seekers set off to cross the Teufelsjoch under the guidance of mountain guides Simon and Julian from Bergschaft. They were still complete strangers to each other, but the excitement and anticipation of the adventure already united them.
What they didn't know at the time was that they would return to the valley at the end of the day with an impressive, varied alpine mountain experience and as a united community.
My first tour with Bergschaft: safety and enjoyment
I was one of the participants in the group led by mountain guide Aspirant Julian on this glorious day. The tour had been on my wish list for a long time. But concerns about the abseiling point held me back from attempting the tour on my own. Anyone who has ever travelled in alpine terrain knows that the right company makes all the difference. When the tour was advertised by Bergschaft under their "spontaneous tours", I knew that this was the ideal opportunity to benefit from their expertise and leadership skills. Their support gave me the security I needed and also the mental freedom to concentrate on the impressive landscape and enjoy the experience to the full. From the first track in the snow to the via ferrata and the abseil, the tour was varied, exciting and at the same time very fulfilling.
A worthwhile investment
A guided day ski tour like this has its price - there's no question about that. Before booking, I too thought at home about whether I really wanted to afford the "pleasure". What convinced me in the end was the thought that an adventure like this would stay with me for a long time afterwards. The memories are worth much more than the amount of money, which may seem lavish at the moment, but will no longer matter after a while.
One thing is certain now: what I have received in return cannot be put in monetary terms. The many impressive views: into the vastness of the glacier, to the surrounding mountains or down from the Teufelsjoch into the sea of fog in the lowlands; the pride of having overcome steep walls and limits in my head; the relaxed conversations on the way and the professional support - all of this made this tour an investment in an experience that will last far beyond everyday life and will always put a smile on my face.
As I learnt from other participants, it was their first experience in high alpine terrain or the first time they had been abseiled down a rope. These moments of overcoming leave a deep impression. The reward for their courage was the growing confidence in their own strength, the feeling of freedom in the mountains and the realisation that respect and overcoming are part of such an adventure.
Women, take heart!
What struck me was that there was only one other woman with me. Guided tours like this offer the perfect opportunity to test your own limits and take on new challenges in a safe environment. Women, have the courage! Every challenge you overcome gives you new self-confidence and shows how much more there is in us than we often think.
Community and trust
During the shared experiences and overcoming difficult passages, we grew closer and closer as a group. By the end of the day, strangers had become a small, close-knit community. The relaxed conversations, shared laughter and mutual support made the day an experience that went far beyond the sporting challenge.
Conclusion: Into the mountains with Bergschaft - an experience that lasts
Travelling with Bergschaft means experiencing the mountains and feeling their transformative power - and returning with a strengthened heart and a smile. Those who have the courage to engage with the mountains will be rewarded with new perspectives and a wonderful feeling of freedom.
In the mountains, we find adventure, connection and also a bit of ourselves. And that's exactly why, through the experience over the Teufelsjoch, we have not only left tracks in the snow but also tracks in our hearts - and with a little courage, you might soon be making your own.
