Skiing in the Lofoten Islands in Norway

Highlights

Norway's unique landscape with white mountains and deep blue sea, surrounded by a multitude of small islands, is to be experienced on ski tours to the imposing peaks. The Lofoten Islands in the north of Norway are a pearl in their own right! The mountains are perfect for ski touring and you can ski all the way down to the sea. There are great birch forests for skiing in Lofoten and many cool variations and possibilities! We spend the night in a classic rorbu right by the sea. Together we explore the island world by car and make varied ski tours to different corners of Lofoten. We ascend from the sea and drive directly back. We know some cool crossings and combinations of peaks and tours. Our accommodation even has a sauna right by the sea!

Ski touring trip Lofoten with Bergschaft

Ski touring trip

Together we spend a week in a rorbu in Lofoten and do a cool ski tour every day. Norway and especially Lofoten have perfect ski touring mountains. We often start comfortably through open birch forests. These are perfect for powder days when visibility is poor, by the way! The peaks in Lofoten are around 1000 m high and there are cool traverses and combinations. There is terrain for every avalanche situation. We often do normal ski tours with slopes around 30°. If conditions are safe, we can also climb alpine peaks with exciting descents. On one of the days we will take a boat and a local skipper to a lonely, wild fjord and do a tour from there! Together we stay in a secluded bay and can watch the northern lights undisturbed. The small towns of Svolvær and Henningsvær are nearby and entice with culinary variety and insights into Norwegian fishing culture.

  • Touring area

We travel high up north, above the Arctic Circle and move around Lofoten. We stay by the sea in a classic rorbu and travel by car to the various tour destinations. In bad weather, the sparse birch forests offer perfect terrain for powdering in fresh snow!

As if it were a dream - looking back, the ski tour in the Lofoten Islands seems like a dream. We were immersed in unfamiliar landscapes. The mountains rising up to sea level are just as spectacular as the island's diverse fauna, culture and cuisine. Despite a lack of snow, often poor visibility and strong winds, thanks to Reto's proactive planning, we were able to go on ski tours around Svolvaer. He knew how to take into account both the collective and individual concerns of the participants. participants. The mystical Northern Lights, the sauna sessions followed by a dip in the icy seawater, the moose and eagle sightings, the warming fish soup and the salmon sandwich on the summit all made the week an unforgettable experience. Let yourself be surprised by skiing above the Arctic Circle. Franziska

The Bergschaft has given me two of my best holidays ever. Ski touring in the Lofoten Islands in Norway and a week of trad climbing in the Dolomites. I have also taken part in weekend climbing trips with my family, ice climbing and splitboarding trips. Every time I finish a trip I book another one because the offers are great, I love the energy and it's always so much fun. I can only recommend Bergschaft and their guides. It's hard to describe - you just have to try it!

Questions and answers about ski touring in Lofoten and how to see the Northern Lights while enjoying powder descents to the sea ?¿

  • Why are the Lofoten Islands famous for ski touring?

The Lofoten Islands offer a spectacular backdrop of snow-covered mountains that drop down into the deeply carved fjords. In addition to perfect ski touring mountains, mighty granite walls characterise the landscape and create an impressive scenery in the middle of the Arctic archipelago. You will often find excellent snow here! In addition to many moderate and leisurely ski touring options, there are also exciting couloirs and challenging lines for ambitious ski tourers. In short: impressive mountains, fantastic ski touring opportunities, branching fjords, often great snow - and with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights dancing across the sky in the evening.

Snow and conditions

  • What is the weather like in Lofoten?

The weather in the Lofoten Islands is varied and can change quickly. Within a few days, stable high-pressure conditions with sunshine and little wind are just as possible as stormy snowfalls and rapid weather changes. The proximity to the sea ensures comparatively mild temperatures for these latitudes - the thermometer is usually around -10 °C, occasionally milder. Wind is a frequent companion and should always be taken into account when planning a tour. Overall, flexibility and good preparation are key to making the most of the changeable conditions.

  • Where can I find information on avalanches and terrain?

Norway operates an app for map material and an avalanche situation report. Local entries can also be viewed here. However, the categorised areas are generally very large and therefore imprecise. You still have to make your own judgements and decisions on the ground. The You can find maps at Norgeskart and the Avalanche report at Varsom.
