Norway has a unique fjord landscape with cool mountains that are perfect for ski touring. Together we will experience this landscape by sailing ship (Ski and Sail). Impressive peaks and crossings await us in a breathtaking atmosphere. It's brilliant to climb up one side of the island in solitude, ski down the other side in powder snow and be picked up again by the sailing yacht!
Ski touring trip
Together we spend a week on the sailboat and do a cool ski tour every day. We are in Norway because of the ski tours with the gigantic views and the rapid descents. The sailboat is the best and coolest means of transport. The ski tours in Norway start comfortably, often in an open birch forest. The peaks are around 1000 metres high. This makes it possible to put together beautiful and varied tours. The steepness of the mountains allows tours in any avalanche situation and often fast descents are possible. We live on a 50 feet (15 m) long boat and have 4 cabins with double beds and each with a small private bathroom with shower. Authentic and friendly, the local couple, Ann-Helen and Halvard, accompany us as skipper and cooking crew. And who wouldn't want to moor the boat on a small jetty, do a cool ski tour, come back and sweat in the sauna, cool off in the sea and spend the evening in the hot top? We know some cool spots!
Procedure and tour area
We travel high up north and move between Lofoten and Tromsø. We are deliberately away from the hot spots, in spectacular nature with optimal ski mountains. But much lonelier! We always start at the sea and ski the most rewarding slopes back to the sea (Sea to Summit). In bad weather, the sparse birch forests offer perfect terrain for powdering in fresh snow!
Individual journey to Harstad. The shortest option is a direct flight from Zurich to Evens-Narvik (EVE) and a 45-minute bus journey to Harstad. Of course, you can arrive earlier and explore the country yourself. Overnight stay at the Thon Hotel.
Getting to know each other and first leisurely ski tour from Harstad. Check into the boat in the middle of the afternoon and sail off to the rest of the tour area.
Varied ski tours depending on the conditions and preferences of the group. There are countless ski tour options available and we choose the most rewarding ones. We spend the night in secluded bays, on small jetties or in small harbours in bad weather. We start our tour in the morning, if possible we make a crossing and in the afternoon we are picked up by our boat where we come down. We then sail to the next tour spot. The crossing ashore takes place with the small dinghy. We enjoy full board on the sailing yacht. The sea in the Norwegian fjords is calm thanks to the many islands, so there are usually no problems with rocking. In the event that you do get seasick, we have a few aids in stock. As a little bonus, on one of the days we will sail to a jetty with a sauna right by the sea 😉
Sail back to Harstad and say goodbye. The shortest journey is again the direct flight back to Zurich at midday.
Requirements
- Mastering the ski touring technique with its basics (skins, hairpin bends). Often these are normal ski tours, as we know them from Switzerland. If possible, we also include tours with passages where we tie on the skis or a foot ascent is included.
- Safe downhill technique in open terrain and in different types of snow. We often find the most beautiful powder snow. But like everywhere else, the weather can do what it wants.
- Condition for 1000m of ascent at a leisurely pace over a week. Sometimes we will do less than 1000m and sometimes more. We divide the tours so that we have enough energy for all days!
- Splitboarders are welcome, provided they are experienced.

- Organisation of alternative programme including transport in case the weather would be too bad for sailing.

- Additional costs are incurred for the journey, the first night in Harstad, catering on the day of arrival and departure and the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Sailing yacht "Bifrost" with local skipper couple
The sailing yacht "Bifrost" is a spacious and lovingly furnished sailing yacht. She has 4 double cabins, 3 double berths for 5 guests, i.e. 1 single berth and 2 double berths. Each berth has its own bathroom with WC, washbasin and shower. Each bunk has drawers and a chest of drawers for storage. The dining room is spacious and offers everyone a warm and dry place. Below deck it is always heated and dry. Wet clothes are dried separately in a heated room, skis and ski boots are stowed dry on deck. Ann-Helen provides us with full board. The food is varied and very tasty. With this yacht and this skipper couple, we are also allowed to moor at the small jetties of the locals and will also spend the night there. We also visit a jetty with a sauna. Thanks to the fjords, the sea is calm. We always spend the night in sheltered places and seasickness has never been a problem! All in all, the perfect setting!

What does the landscape of Norway's fjords look like?
Norway's landscape is characterised by the branching coastal region with its fjords. Directly from the sea, the mountains rise. Often the mountains on the coast are so steep that it is easy to ski. But there are also imposing rock faces. The lower part is often covered with open birch forests. However, these birch trees are only about 3 m high. They offer enough protection and contrast to enjoy the fresh powder snow even in bad weather. The mountains are about 800 to 1200 m high, so that varied ski tours with crossings can be put together.
What is the best way to travel to Norway?
The easiest way to get there is with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) via Oslo to Harstad/Narvik (EVE). It is more environmentally friendly and comfortable to travel part of the way by train. The combination of train and plane makes the most sense, as the connections in Norway are not optimal. You can take the night train to Hamburg and from there to Copenhagen. From Copenhagen to Norway by plane. Another alternative is to travel by plane to Tromsø and from there by train to Norway. Speedboat along the coast to Harstad. Tromsø has more flights with only one stopover.
What is sailing like in Norway?
Sailing in the fjords is comfortable and relaxing. Because of the many islands, there is no strong wind and so we can sail comfortably through the fjords. Our skipper is very experienced and knows the Norwegian waters well. If there is no wind, our boat has a motor with which we can cover the distance. We sail around 3 hours per day. We have the opportunity to take over as much of the sailing as we want. Halvard and Ann-Helen are happy to show us the craft of sailing.
How do I pay in Norway?
Norway has Norwegian kroner (NOK). The exchange rate is almost exactly 10:1, so 10 NOK is 1 CHF. In Norway, you pay almost exclusively by credit card. So you don't need to bring almost any cash with you.
Can we also fish on the boat?
Sure! If you like fishing, our local crew will be happy to show you exactly how it works. We can also include the caught fish in our meals.
What is living on the ship like?
We travel on a 50 foot (15 m) long ship. We have double rooms and enough space to spend the evenings in the saloon. When the northern lights appear, we can enjoy the spectacle on deck. The ship is equipped with heating, shower, toilet, running water and all amenities. It has enough space, but of course it is not as big as a hotel.
With a small dinghy, the "Dhingi", we get from the ship to land. If the weather is fine, we can anchor in the bays of Norway and really experience nature. In unsettled and stormy weather we can spend the night sheltered in a harbour and enjoy the amenities of the mainland with restaurants and cafés. On board there is full board with local specialities.
Our local crew knows the area very well and can tell many local stories. Our guides have been to Norway several times and know the coolest runs and traverses in the country.
Will I see northern lights?
Our mountain guides have been ski touring in Norway several times and so far they have always been able to observe the Northern Lights. Of course, we cannot guarantee that the weather will cooperate, but the chances are good. Moreover, in March the days are such that we can go ski touring in normal light and the night starts early enough. Sunrise is at 6am and sunset at 6pm.
