Questions and answers about guided ski tours ?¿

      • What are recommended ski touring classics?

There are so many cool and rewarding ski tours. The classics among them are:

        • Säntis, with the great freetouring options, thanks to the suspension railway
        • Lötschenlücke, easy high-altitude ski tour over large glaciers
        • Clariden, a ski touring pearl in the Glarus region
        • Pizol, easily accessible by cable car and with a few cool couloirs
        • Pazolastock, one of the most popular ski tours on the Oberalp Pass
        • Sustenhorn, Varied tour, with large glaciers
      • What are great 2-day ski tours?

Nice 2-day tours are the following:

        • Piz Palü, the classic in the Engadine
        • Piz Kesch, with an exciting ascent to the summit with the crampons
        • Tödi, classic in 2 days, as a fitness test also in one day, but best of all, the whole Glarner Haute Route in 4 days.
        • Galenstock, the king on the Furka Pass to Andermatt
      • What are great 3-day ski tours?

There are various multi-day tours on skis. These can be done in different variations, for example:

But the skis are also great for climbing many high mountains. For example:

        • Finsteraarhorn, one of the most beautiful tours on the gigantic glaciers of the Bernese Oberland
        • Aletschhorn, versatile tour with three days of action
        • Dufourspitze, clearly the longest tour of the highest Swiss mountain.

When you strap your skis back on your feet after the summit, you know why you go on these tours in spring and not on foot in summer. It is magnificent to glide over the wide expanses of the glaciers on skis.

      • When can ski tours be made?

The ski touring season is long. It often starts in December, sometimes already in November, and lasts until the middle / end of May. The best powder days are often a little later, in February, March or April. At the end of the season, i.e. in May and often still in June, the high mountains can be skied. It is unbelievably great to ski over big glaciers, stand on 4000m peaks and then ski back down to the valley, arrive back in summer and climb the last part through lush, green vegetation into the valley.

      • Is it possible to go ski touring at night?

Sure, you can do it and it's a great experience at full moon. But you have to respect nature, the animals need peace and quiet at night. So avoid the forests, do not use bright lights when climbing and keep quiet. Of course, you must respect the protected areas. You can find them via the Map material from the federal government view.

      • What belongs to the ski touring equipment?

        • Avalanche shovel, probe and avalanche transceiver are standard safety equipment and must always be carried.
        • Skis with skins and ski boots and poles are of course essential.
        • Plus the right clothes.
        • Meanwhile, most people take a helmet with them on ski tours. For spring, there are climbing helmets that also meet the ski standard.

detailed packing list with packing tips can be found on our website.

      • Why do people go ski touring next to or on the ski slope?

On or off-piste, ski touring is done for training and to be absolutely safe with the avalanche danger. But you have to watch out for the skiers and be careful with the snow groomers and their steel cables.

      • Are there any exciting documentaries about ski touring?

      • What is the longest ski tour in the world?

There is no official longest ski tour in the world. Popular and long is the:

        • Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt with around 6700m of ascent and a distance of around 95km.

Popular day tours as a fitness test are:

        • the Mont Blanc from Chamonix (3800hm, 15km) or
        • the Tödi as a day tour (2800hm, 13km).
      • What are the advantages of a guided ski tour?

On a guided ski tour, you get to enjoy the day to the full. You don't have to prepare anything and can follow the well-laid and prepared track of the mountain guide. We also look for solitary tours in spectacular terrain, go at a leisurely pace and look for the best descent. Tours with a mountain guide can also be combined with training courses, depending on your needs and time requirements.

      • What does the mountain guide do on the ski tour?

The mountain guide does all the planning in advance on the ski tour. This includes the analysis of the weather report, avalanche danger and snow situation. From this he selects the most promising tour. He communicates this with the guests and gives them all the necessary information and tips. During the tour, the mountain guide creates a good track and prepares it with an ice axe or shovel where necessary. He collects a lot of information during the ascent, evaluates whether the planning from home matches the current situation and makes adjustments where necessary. He is happy to pass on this and other information about flora, fauna, snow and the mountains to his group. Furthermore, the mountain guide takes care of a good atmosphere in the group and influences the group dynamics positively. With all the information from the ascent, he looks for the most promising downhill route, which is possible given the current avalanche danger.

      • Where can you book ski tours?

With the Bergschaft you can Ski toursCoursesTheory evenings and also Ski mountaineering can be booked. We offer cool tours that are also fun for our mountain guides every time, convey content didactically and competently and are simply happy to be on the road with you. Joint tours with us are a highlight every time!

      • Are there any well-known ski touring races?

The most famous ski touring race is the:

        • Patrouille de Glacier (PDG), from Zermatt via Arolla to Verbier, which is organised by the Swiss military.

There are also a large number of different ski touring races:

        • Nightattack, at the beginning of the season on the Flumserberg
        • MunggaRun, in Elm
        • Skimara in Kandersteg as good preparation for the PDG

Details of the Swiss competitive sport can be found at the SAC. Jonas has a lot of experience with ski touring races and will be happy to show you the ropes and train passionately with you.

      • How do you walk properly with touring skis?

With touring skis it is important that the skis stay on the ground all the time. The ski must glide on the snow, from back to front. To do this, you take slightly longer steps than in everyday life and use the poles asynchronously for balance. To make a turn, you step slowly in flatter terrain. To do this, you must first form a V and then an A shape with your skis, otherwise you will cross them over. In steeper terrain, you have to change direction with sharp turns. We will gladly show you this in a our courses or have a look at this video the technology.
